Nowadays, music plays a significant role in our daily life. It’s a great way of entertaining and a form of art present in movies, TV shows, advertising, etc. But music can also be a great way to help you learn a language, especially if you like to listen to music in your free time.
There are thousands of awesome Spanish-speaking singers and hundreds of famous songs that are in Spanish. Listening to music in Spanish can help you improve in an easy and fun way without having to go through the struggle of studying grammar rules.
What are some tips that can help you implement this language-learning strategy into your Spanish learning journey?
- Choose songs that you like. This might sound obvious, but I’ve seen many people pick songs that everybody listens to, not because they like them but because they’re famous. Finding an artist you enjoy listening to shouldn’t be too difficult. If you like pop, just go into Spotify or any music app and browse through all the pop artists you can find in Spanish. Eventually, you will have a handful of options that you like.
- Try to listen actively. The first and most important thing is to get used to the sounds and pronunciation of Spanish and determine how many words you understand. It’s also important to avoid getting obsessed with this, as it could become unenjoyable and more like an obligation. Try to listen, paying a little attention to the song and the details, and you’ll start getting used to the language naturally.
- Translate the lyrics. This is one of the most effective ways actually to boost your learning. You can learn a lot of vocabulary this way and get used to the language’s grammar structures without needing a book. In your free time, choose one of your favorite songs and try to translate the lyrics into your mother tongue.
- Create thematic playlists. It’s a good idea to have different playlists for different moments, for example, one for when you are exercising, another for when you are in the car, and one for when you are sad, instead of having one extensive playlist for all the Spanish songs, create thematic playlists.
- Watch the music videos. It can also be a fun activity to watch the music videos of the songs you like listening to, as they can be really fun to watch and can motivate you to keep learning.
