Learning a new language can be a challenging journey. It requires consistency, effort, and time, and it’s easy to give up after a while. The key, though, is knowing how to learn the language in a way that motivates you and that you can enjoy. After working with many different students during my experience as a Spanish tutor, I have noticed that some tips usually work for most people when they start learning the language. If you are asking yourself: “How to learn Spanish better?”, these tips might help you.
First of all, it’s essential to have the right mindset. You have to be aware that the learning path is not going to be easy and that there are going to be frustrations and difficult things that you are going to have to go through. Once you accept this, you will start seeing the process more positively. Therefore, it will be easier to stay motivated. For this, it’s also very important to set a primary goal: the main reason you are learning Spanish. This can be to live in a Spanish-speaking country, for work reasons, to communicate with Spanish-speaking friends or family, improve your Spanish business conversation, solve problems in Spanish, etc. This goal should be present during your journey of learning the language, and it can work as a reminder of why you should keep up the good work. Also, it’s great to have secondary goals, which can be more specific tasks or things to do that are related to learning Spanish. It’s wise to have a couple of goals every week. For example, watching a movie in Spanish or reviewing the past tense.
Another very useful thing, even though it can seem very basic, is to have a good grammar book that you can use as a reference and as your guide during the process. Hundreds of textbooks and grammar books are on the market, and it’s easy to find one that adapts to your style. There’s one that I especially like because of its simplicity and straightforwardness. It is very useful for English speakers. The book is Complete Spanish Step-by-Step by Barbara Bregstein.
It’s also very important to start doing things to immerse yourself in the language. Surround yourself with Spanish, even if you don’t understand most things. Start listening to music in Spanish, watching YouTube videos, movies, or series in Spanish (with subtitles in your own language at first), reading easy books (kid books tend to work very well in the early stages), writing a diary in Spanish, etc.
Something else that might seem obvious, but many people don’t actually follow this advice, is to focus on simple things and take your time to learn the concepts that you study. As a beginner, you should focus on learning things such as the present tense, colors, numbers, simple verbs, or basic vocabulary. Don’t get overwhelmed with complex verbs or grammar concepts yet. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t understand something at first – it takes time! Enjoy the process of learning the language, and make sure you understand the concepts well, even if you need to take some hours to do so.
Another suggestion is to review what you’ve learned previously. If possible, schedule some time every week to review what you have already learned. This is crucial if you don’t want to forget everything after a couple of weeks.
Last but not least, consider getting a tutor or attending some Spanish classes. This can contribute immensely to learning a language, making the process much faster and making you more committed to learning and progressing. You can try with some conversational Spanish lessons online, or some business Spanish lessons in case you need help in your career. You’ll have the option to have your own personal Spanish teacher, which will help a lot in the long term.
As you have seen, learning a language is both challenging and exciting. However, with the right mindset and resources, it can become easier and more enjoyable.
Good luck in your Spanish learning journey!
