As an educator, I always recommend watching TV shows in Spanish to my students. It’s one of the most effective ways to improve your Spanish level, offering numerous advantages and helping you get accustomed to the language’s grammar, pronunciation, and sounds.
Moreover, it’s a delightful pastime that can transform your language-learning journey into a thrilling adventure, requiring only minimal effort.
In this post, you will find some Spanish TV shows that can help you learn while enjoying a good plot.
But first, here are some tips on how to watch TV in Spanish.
It’s important to use subtitles, depending on your level. If you are a beginner, I recommend watching it with subtitles in your mother tongue because otherwise, you will not understand much. If you are at an intermediate level, you can watch it with subtitles in Spanish, and make sure to pause and translate whatever you don’t understand (there can be many things you will not catch, so don’t translate everything, only if it makes it impossible for you to follow what they’re saying). If you have advanced Spanish, you can watch TV in Spanish with no subtitles, so you can entirely focus on listening and getting all the details.
Also, make sure to watch stuff you know you’ll enjoy, or it’ll be something you’ll do because of an obligation and not something you do out of enjoyment.
Spanish TV Shows
Caso Asunta
This show follows the story of a little girl who disappeared in Galicia, in the north of Spain, and the investigation around her parents. I recommend watching it without knowing too much about it. There are a lot of plot twists, and it keeps you wanting to watch one episode after the other. It’s a mini-series, and it’s based on a true story. It reflects faithfully how the events happened in reality. The acting is fantastic as well. Most people speak with a Galician accent since it’s where it happened, and it can be something you’re not used to hearing but equally suitable for practice.

El Ministerio del Tiempo
This series focuses on time travel and shows some of the most critical moments of Spanish history, so it’s good for practicing and learning more about the Spanish past and culture. In the show, there’s a super secret agency whose mission is to protect the course of time and stop criminals from making changes that can affect the timeline.

La casa de papel
This is one of the most successful Spanish TV shows ever. A group of people plans and executes one of the most risky robberies ever. It’ll keep you wanting to watch more, and it’s very good for practicing as it contains many different accents from Spain and some from Latin America as well. It has several seasons, and it’s available on Netflix.

El internado
This show has a new version, but I have only watched the older one, and I love it. It follows the story of a group of teenagers and their lives at a boarding school, where strange events occur. There’s drama, love, mystery, and a variety of accents as well.

Isabel
This show is a historical drama with great plot and acting. It portrays the story of Queen Isabel and the events that took place during her period. Even though some expressions can be a little archaic, it’s still a great show to practice and listen to Spanish.
